Today, the family has grown to include automotive businesses with Ford, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Nissan, Honda, Kia and Hyundai. It was a Ford dealership, and probably the biggest one in Ohio at the time, according to David Waikem. He later opened the first family car store in the fall of 1973. Air Force, the former Timken steelworker started out leasing tractor trailers in the mid-1950s. “My dad had a feeling this stretch of highway, between Massillon and Canton, really had something,” Waikem said, adding that farmland and hotels made up much of the area when his father purchased the land.Īfter a stint in the U.S. David is one of three sons who co-own seven dealerships with family members that stretch along Lincoln Way E in the township. The father of the business, George Waikem Sr., was a visionary, according to David Waikem. “My first car was a 1958 Ford Retractable.”įor more than four decades, the Waikem family has been a staple in the local automotive sales industry. “I’m glad dad decided not to sell shoes,” he said laughing. As a teenager, David Waikem appreciated that his father sold cars for a living, and recalled that it was special to always have something nice to drive.
